What to do After an Auto Accident

What to do After an Auto AccidentThere is no way around it, auto accident are very scary. They can happen at anytime and without warning. It is tough to prepare yourself for impact when you don't know it is coming. However, what you can prepare for is what to do after an accident. The following steps are a basic rundown of what you need to do if you are involved in a car wreck. What is most important though is ensuring that you are healthy and safe. If you're on the freeway remember not to get out of your car until instructed to do so by a police officer or other first responder.

Check for injuries

Once the dust settles carefully check yourself for injuries. Make sure you can move all your fingers and toes and check for any blood. After deeming yourself physically OK check your passengers, if any, and then check the occupants of the other vehicles involved. If anyone requests an ambulance or if it is obvious one is needed call 911 right away.

Contact the police

Regardless as to whether or not their are any serious injuries you should call the police and request their presence. Not only with the deter anyone from trying to leave the scene prematurely but it will also give you a chance to file an all important police report.

Collect evidence from the scene

When appropriate take some photos of the scene using your phone or a digital camera. You will want to take close ups of damage and far away photos of the whole scene. Also snap some pics of other drivers' insurance cards and licenses. If any witnesses are around ask them to write a statement.

Get in touch with your insurance agency

Prior to leaving the scene get in touch with your insurance carrier to inform them of the accident and to ensure you complete any necessary post accident steps they may require. When you're able to do so bring all of your collected evidence to your insurance agent. This includes witness statements, the police report and the photographs.
