Understanding an Auto Body Repair Estimate

Understanding an Auto Body Repair EstimateFollowing an auto accident it is common practice to get a quote to have the damages repaired. While many people, at some point or another, are going to end up visit a body shop for such a service, it seems that the quote itself is still a relative mystery. Thankfully, we're here to shine a little light on what it all means. In the most basic sense an estimate, in terms of dollars and sense, is a statement of approximate costs. But why do we need that?

What is the purpose of a collision repair quote?

You don't buy anything else without knowing how much it is going to cost, do you? An auto body repair estimate is no different than a sticker price on new car, or a can of soup for that matter. The difference is that it is a rough, although accurate in many cases, assumption of what the final cost will be.

During an estimate the repair technician won't be disassembling the car and will be basing their estimate based off visible damages. Things can take a turn, for better or worse, once the work actually begins. Once the repair shop does take the damaged vehicle apart they'll be able to better assess the condition of the car and inform you of any additional work that may be necessary to get you back on the road.

The other reasons to get a quote is so that your insurance is aware of the costs to get your vehicle back on the road. In most cases a quote is required to begin the repair process when filing an insurance claim after an accident.

Getting multiple quotes for insurance purposes

If you select a reliable auto body repair shop to complete the initial estimate on your vehicle there is no reason to get a second one. While your insurance company may ask you to do so, there is no law that says you have to. While you can choose to get multiple repairs, just remember that any fluctuation in the quote (lower prices) often represent inexperience, not dishonesty.

The final bill compared to initial estimate

Remember, a quote is just a quote and it is very possible for the final price to differ from the estimate. While the final bill may come in over or under the original quote, it isn't likely going to be too far off from the original price.
