Auto Body Repair Glossary: 8 Terms to Know

Auto Body Repair Glossary: 8 Terms to KnowIf you are having any sort of collision repair completed on your car it is likely you will run into a few terms on the paperwork that you are unfamiliar with. The following are a few commonly misunderstood auto body repair words and acronyms that you should be aware of. If you have any questions about the quote you receive or the services rendered, be sure to ask!

Aftermarket Parts

This refers to parts that may fit your vehicle but were not produced by the original manufacturer of the car. It is better to have OEM, or original equipment manufacturer, parts.

Betterment

Betterment is a term used to describe when an item is replaced during auto body repairs that already has some wear, most commonly referring to tires and batteries. For example if the tires are ¾ through their life, insurance will cover ¼ the cost of them.

Chipping

Chipping means that paint is coming off in a flaking manner, often due to impacts with rocks or other road debris.

Coat

A coat refers to a layer of paint. This could be a base coat, clear coat or otherwise.

DRP

DRP stands for direct replacement program, which is generally a contract between the auto body shop and your insurance. It is basically an agreement about the rules of the repair.

LKQ

Like Kind and Quality means that apart is being replaced with a part from another used car. The part is inspected by the seller (supplier) and the buyer (the auto body shop) to ensure it is in good shape.

Prep

Short for preparation, it is generally used in regard to the washing, degreasing and other steps taken before applying paint.

R&R

Remove and Replace is what R&R stands for. This means a part is taken off the vehicle and replaced with a new one because the old one was damaged.
